When you are facing a miscarriage, medical information and everyday logistics arrive together. You may be trying to understand treatment while also wondering who will watch your children or whether you can work tomorrow.
Writing questions down can help you keep your priorities in the conversation. You do not need a perfect list. Start with whatever would make the next step clearer.
Ask about the choices available to you
For first-trimester miscarriage, treatment may include waiting, medication, or a procedure. Your clinician should explain which options fit your situation and whether there is a medical reason to act quickly.
Ask:
- “What are the benefits and risks of each option for me?”
- “What might I experience, and where will care happen?”
- “What happens if this approach does not work?”
- “What pain relief or anesthesia is available?”
Your concerns about being at home, seeing blood or tissue, or undergoing a procedure belong in this discussion. You can say which parts worry you most without having already chosen an option.
Discuss the practical details
Ask whether you need someone to accompany you or drive you home. If sedation or anesthesia is planned, get the facility’s exact transportation and supervision requirements before booking a ride.
Find out whether you need time away from work, help with lifting, or assistance caring for children. Ask for written instructions that reflect your actual treatment rather than general advice alone.
If cost is a concern, request an explanation of likely charges and insurance requirements from the office or billing team.
Know how follow-up will work
Ask when you should contact the office, what follow-up is needed, and how you will receive results. Save the after-hours number in your phone.
You can close the appointment with: “Can we review the plan once more so I know what to do when I get home?”
Clear explanations can make care easier to navigate. You deserve an opportunity to understand and ask questions throughout the process.
