Facing Your Due Date After a Pregnancy Loss

By L.A. Loss & Abortion Doula

A due date can remain on your mind long after the pregnancy has ended. It may be written in a calendar, attached to a season, or connected to plans you had begun to make.

You may want to mark it. You may want an ordinary day. You may not know until the morning arrives.

Pregnancy-loss organizations recognize due dates and anniversaries as occasions some families choose to acknowledge. There is no requirement to create a ceremony or make the day public.

Make a flexible plan

Rather than decide exactly how you must feel, consider what would give you options.

Could you leave an event early? Would you prefer a quiet evening at home? Is there someone who can be available if you want company?

You might tell a trusted person: “My due date is next week. I don’t know what I’ll need, but could you check in without expecting a reply?”

If the date falls on a workday, consider what is practical within your circumstances. You might arrange a quieter evening, prepare dinner ahead of time, or avoid an optional commitment.

Choose a private act of remembrance, if you want one

You could write a letter, place a flower somewhere meaningful, listen to a song, or keep a small object connected to the pregnancy. You can also choose to do nothing visible.

A remembrance does not need to be shared online. A quiet choice can hold meaning without an explanation to anyone else.

Talk about expectations with your partner

One of you may want to acknowledge the date while the other has not planned anything. Ask directly: “Would you like to do something together, separately, or keep the day open?”

Agreeing on a small gesture may be easier than expecting the other person to guess.

Your plans can change. If a carefully chosen activity feels wrong that morning, you can cancel it. The date belongs to your experience; you do not have to perform grief in a particular way.
