You may not have known whether you wanted to continue the pregnancy. You may have been worried about money, your relationship, your health, or becoming a mother at this point in your life.
Then you miscarried, and your feelings became more complicated rather than simpler.
Relief and grief can exist together after the loss of an unplanned pregnancy. You may feel relieved that a difficult decision is no longer ahead of you while also feeling sadness about the pregnancy ending. Tommy’s recognizes that women in this situation may face conflicting emotions and assumptions from others.
You do not have to choose one explanation
Try describing the particular feeling rather than deciding what the whole experience means.
“I feel relieved about my financial situation.”
“I feel sad that this ended before I understood what I wanted.”
“I don’t know how I feel yet.”
Each statement leaves room for the others. You do not have to make your experience sound consistent enough for someone else to approve of it.
Earlier uncertainty did not cause the loss
Wondering whether to continue a pregnancy is not evidence that you caused a miscarriage. Ordinary worry or ambivalence does not establish a medical cause.
If you are concerned about a specific medicine, exposure, or health condition, ask your clinician directly rather than trying to resolve the question through self-blame.
Choose support that allows complexity
You can set the terms of a conversation: “I need to talk without being told how I should feel about the pregnancy.”
If a friend insists that you must be devastated or must be relieved, it is reasonable to end the discussion. A counselor familiar with reproductive loss may help you explore feelings without requiring a particular conclusion.
You can also accept practical support before you are ready to talk. Your need for food, rest, and appropriate medical care does not depend on how certain you were about the pregnancy.
You do not need to turn this experience into a lesson immediately. There can be time to understand it gradually.
