An ultrasound appointment may begin with ordinary expectations: a measurement, a picture, an update. Hearing that the pregnancy has stopped developing can feel difficult to understand when your body has not given you an obvious warning.
A missed miscarriage is a pregnancy loss in which the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus. There may be little or no bleeding or pain before it is discovered. Having no clear symptoms does not mean you should have known sooner.
Ask what has been confirmed
When a scan is inconclusive, especially early in pregnancy, clinicians may need another ultrasound or blood tests before making a diagnosis. Ask whether the findings confirm a loss or whether the pregnancy’s viability remains uncertain.
Useful questions include:
- “What did the scan show?”
- “Are these findings definitive?”
- “Do I need another scan or blood test before deciding about treatment?”
- “Can you write down the findings for me?”
You can ask the clinician to repeat an explanation. Bringing someone who can take notes may help you keep track of information when it is difficult to concentrate.
Understand your care options
After a confirmed early miscarriage, care may involve waiting for tissue to pass, medication, or a procedure. Which choices are appropriate depends on your symptoms, medical history, clinical findings, and preferences. Some situations require prompt treatment.
If you are medically stable, ask how much time you have to consider the available options. You can also ask about pain relief, privacy, expected bleeding, and what happens if the first approach does not complete the miscarriage.
Leave with a follow-up plan
Before leaving, find out whom to call during office hours and after hours. Ask how your team will check that treatment is complete and which symptoms need urgent attention.
You do not have to understand every detail immediately. A reasonable first goal is to know what has been confirmed, what happens next, and where to get help.
